A Tale of Two Rivers

January 18, 2014

One of our most popular events each year is the Messing About on the River day, where we converge to the River Tale at Escot Park for a day of family fun – this year’s date is Sunday July 27th 2014 so do put it in your diaries...

As you can see, at present with the relentless wet weather the River Tale has turned into a rather overbearing force, however, we are prepared to review the river banks and potential erosion as soon as conditions allow. Following the flash floods last winter, mitigation work on the Tale lead to a 3-way split of water flow and the formation of an ideal island for Messing About on The River.

The Eastern water course was perfect for creating a man-made 'beaver dam' and resultant swimming/wading, whilst the shallower slow pool of water above this was ideal for the model raft sailing! The discovery of river beasties, fly casting, picnicking, face painting and info from partners including SWW, Devon Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency, Westcountry Rivers Trust and the Devon Mammal Group also lined the banks. Thanks also to our sponsors The Pennon Group and DEFRA.

We are looking forwards to the 2014 event, and whatever the weather we will be there with activities and entertainment for all the family!
